Take Your Adornment at Every Masjid

Two days ago I was making Salah in the masjid in shorts that were long enough to reach my shins. I wear these shorts for ease and comfort in Salah, as well as the many pockets provided to hold my wallet, keys, phone, Layth’s toys … etc.

An egyptian elder later came up to me and told me that I shouldn’t wear shorts in the masjid. He quoted the following aayah as proof:

يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُواْ زِينَتَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وكُلُواْ وَاشْرَبُواْ وَلاَ تُسْرِفُواْ إِنَّهُ لاَ يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ

Translated as:

“O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.”

In the elders view the word “zeenah“, translated here as adornment, meant the nicest clothes that one has. So I shared with the noble sayyid the context of the revelation of this verse.

Imam At-Tabari as well as all the major mufassirun (exegetes) state that this verse was revealed because people used to circumbulate (make tawaaf) around the santuary in Makkah nude.

Ibn ‘Abbas said regarding this verse, ‘They used to circumbulate around the sanctuary nude. So Allah commanded them to wear clothes and not to be nude.”

Ibn ‘Abbas also explained the word “zeenah” as والزينة: اللباس Al-Libaas or clothing.

So the command is not fancy clothes, or “nice” clothes, but the command is simply that one is not exposing their ‘awrah.

‘Ata explained this verse by commenting, “Wearing one’s clothes.” ((Tabari’s tafsir beneath this verse ))

Ibrahim An-Nakha’i said about this verse:

كان ناس يطوفون بالبيت عراة فنهوا عن ذلك

“The people used to circumbulate around the sanctuary nude, so they were forbidden from doing that.” Mujahid commented, “This was revealed regarding the Quraysh as they used to abandon clothing when making tawaf.” Tawus said, “It means clothing.”

However, a point should be made here. Imam Al-Baydawi states in his tafsir:

{ يَـٰبَنِى ءادَمَ خُذُواْ زِينَتَكُمْ } ثيابكم لمواراة عورتكم. { عِندَ كُلّ مَسْجِدٍ } لطواف أو صلاة، ومن السنة أن يأخذ الرجل أحسن هيئة للصلاة، وفيه دليل على وجوب ستر العورة في الصلاة.

["at every masjid..."] i.e. For tawaf and salah. And it is from the Sunnah that one takes for one’s self the best attire for prayer. And in this verse is proof that it is obligatory for one to cover their ‘awrah in Salah.”

Ibn Juzayy Al-Kalbi mentions that there are two opinions regarding this verse; the first being that it simply refers to covering the ‘awrah with clothing and the second is that it is what is additional to clothing such as beautifying one’s self for jumu’ah with one’s best clothing, as well as using miswak and perfumes. ((Tafsir at-tashil ))

    Assalaamwualikkum,
same as bro Abul Layth, I was also told that we should not fold the pant’s hem. I will posted the fatwa below-
Folding pant’s hem and performing Salah in it

(Darul Uloom Amjadia, India, Printed in Monthly Kanzul Iman, India)
Q: If the pant’s hems are at ankles can they be folded before performing Namaz?
A: If pant’s bottoms are at ankle it is not allowed to fold them to perform namaz, perform the Namaz without folding them. If pant’s hems are kept below ankles because of pride, it is HARAM, in this case Namaz will be Makrooh-e-Tehreemi (Wajib to repeat Namaz) otherwise it’s only Makrooh-e-Tanzeehi which is Khilafe Aula in Namaz. Same is written in Fatawa-e-Rizvia in part three on page 448. In case of folding the pants hems in Namaz will definitely be Makrooh-e-Tehreemi which will make it Wajib to perform the Namaz again. It’s in Hadees *. Rasool Allah Sallallahu Alaihe Wasslam said:” I was ordered that not to fold hair and cloth (In Namaz)” ted in Darr-e-Mukhtar with Shami Part one page 473. art one, Page 137)-Allah Ta’ala Knows the best.
I just want to know is their any other fatwa on this Topic.
    JazakAllah

Folding the garments is seen as mubah in the Maliki school–as reported by Imam al-Qarafi in al-Dhakhira.
